SANDRA BARREIRO

Sandra started making sculptures back in 2010. Her first series was a reinterpretation on the work of photographer Sebastião Salgado. Albeit the starkness of the themes of his work, which make an approach on the gaps and inequalities in society, Sandra's outlook has brought bright and warmth to the collection, which causes impact and arises sublime, yet intriguing emotions.

“A Segunda Infância” ("Second Childhood"), the second series signed by Sandra, is a reinterpretation of the work of Manoel de Barros. The gracefulness and sweetness of her artworks are a hallmark of the collection, inspired by de Barros' very Brazilian poetry.

From the union of the two collections, came a third series of sculptures, which curiously makes reference to the work of Cândido Portinari, especially "Guerra e Paz" ("War and Peace").

Sandra Barreiro doesn't only make sculptures — she goes further by giving forms, colors and textures to poetry. And while she finds her main source of inspiration in literature, it's in Brasilidade that she finds her most primorous source of raw material.

One sure hallmark of Sandra Barreiro's work is her technical freedom which allows her to use any kind of raw material and turn it into something totally new. "From the raw material to the completing stage of my work, everything is very intuitive", says the artist. Commonly, she works with light materials, such as paper, Scotch tape, and so on. The result: very flexible and resistant artpieces, full of lightness and movement. While technically and thematically versatile, Sandra Barreiro's sculptures are full of a memorable, unique, peculiar language, as subjective and profound as the artist's inner world.
